(9:45 AM) | Adam Kotsko:
Origen from a Blogological Perspective
Origen's Against Celsus is an early example of that genre which we bloggers would today call a "fisking," that is, a line-by-line refutation of a work. As such, it is somewhat tedious and frustrating to read. The appearance of incoherence on the part of the fisker is almost unavoidable, as the entire point of the exercise is to rally every possible argument against the text at hand, even if those arguments are mutually contradictory. (This effect is only magnified by Origen's incredible thoroughness.)There are interesting parts, but at this point, I'm largely reduced to scanning for things that look "weird" in some way.
