The Tuesday Hatred
BEFORE YOU READ THIS: Check out Scott McLemee's column for today.
I hate blogs that are set up so that if you click the "comments" link, it takes you to the individual post page and you still have to scroll down for the comments. On a John Holbo post, that can be crippling. I also hate blogs that are set up so that if you follow a link and then push the back button, it always goes back to the top of the page, rather than leaving you scrolled to where you left off.
I hate how much I want to sleep lately -- I feel like I could sleep in until eleven or twelve every day, then turn around and go to bed at ten-thirty.
I hate the dream I had last night: I was at home for some kind of school break, but I was planning on temping while I was there. The temp agency called me and asked if I could translate any foreign languages, and I told her I could translate from German and French to English, but not really the reverse. She was apparently on the other line with the client, and she decided to just connect us so that the client could figure out for herself whether I was what she was after. She had a terrible connection on her phone, so I kept having to ask her to repeat herself. At the end, I wasn't sure whether she wanted me to come in that same day or the next morning, and when she asked, the phone cut out, so I had to ask again. She became very frustrated and said that if I couldn't figure out this simple thing, then she didn't want me working for her anyway. This dream kept flashing into my head over and over throughout the night.
I hate that someone can't just hand me some desk-sitting or receptionist job. I hate that I turned down a job like that (with minimal hours) based on the belief that I was going to have some work during the semester that I didn't end up actually having. I hate that this kind of thing hasn't really ended up working out exactly like I planned, ever -- in fact, the only job that has ever worked out like I thought it would for probably the last five years has been the chiropractor job. In absolute terms, it does end up "working out" in the long run, though.
