(8:25 AM) | Adam Kotsko:
The Economy
I think we are entering into a new phase in the world economy: the post-job phase. As time passes, less and less of the money in the world will be devoted to such tedious pursuits as the production of goods and services, and instead it will be granted the limitless freedom of finance and open-ended speculation. This will be wonderful for the economy, because as we know, labor is always the biggest drag on profits. As more and more profits are generated and the wealth of the world grows, then maybe all those jobless people will have a chance to finally get around to reading Capital (assuming they're able to steal a copy from the library before government is completely shut down in order to avoid profit-reducing taxes).
A violent revolution will ensue, and even though the emaciated unemployed peoples of the world are weak and poorly organized, the capitalists will recognize the threat and drop The Bomb on all major population centers in the world. The fallout will render the capitalists and the few remaining unemployed sterile, and the human race will die out entirely.
Then, with the final obstacle to profit removed at long last, the economy will really start to take off. If anyone were there to say anything, she would certainly say, "Can't you see, you morons? Marx was wrong! Capitalism won!"
