Wednesday, December 15, 2004(10:37 PM) | Adam Kotsko: Social SecurityJosh Marshall seems to be exactly right about how Democrats should approach Social Security reform (via John Holbo, who has been struggling to develop an effective ad campaign on this issue -- I approved of this attempt, which was rejected on the grounds of being too anti-market). For Marshall, the basic question is whether or not we want to keep a system of guaranteed benefits for everyone. Democrats should not allow themselves to be caught in the rhetorical side-trails in which Republicans love to indulge -- for instance, whether the stock market is comparable to casino gambling. |
