(2:03 PM) | Adam Kotsko:
The Coming Progressive Majority
Ralph Luker has linked to an article about a potential alliance between leftist intellectuals and right-wing Christians. The primary issue: poverty, which he rightly notes is a non-starter in either political party. There's a lot to disagree with in the article, but I think it's worth reading, if only to begin envisioning some of the ways that the political power of evangelical Christians could be directed leftward -- especially since the nominal "left" in our country has by and large abandoned leftist positions on economic issues. Perhaps Žižek will turn out to be right after all.On a Žižek-related note, yesterday I read the Badiou anthology Infinite Thought, named after one of our illustrious fellow bloggers. His thoughts on 9/11 and the War on Terrorism were very "provocative," as Simon Critchley's blurb declares. Here's a tidbit:
For the American superpower isno thing but the deadly guarantee of the obscene accumulation of wealth. The American army is the instrument of the Race of 'Western' lords against the wretched of the entire planet.I highly recommend that essay, and indeed the entire book, which you can easily purchase using this little thing:
