(2:34 PM) | Adam Kotsko:
The Unavoidable
Coldplay is now unavoidable. I'm worried that they may become the next U2 -- a rock band for people who don't actually like rock music. Thankfully, I don't notice many overtly Christian themes, although some treatment of Christianity seems almost inevitable in a long enough musical career, particularly for bands that are characterized by earnestness.I will note that the following are arguably the worst beginning lines of any song ever:
How long before I get in?I'm always embarrassed for him when he sings those lines. The closest equivalent may be from the Smashing Pumpkins song "Tonight, Tonight," where he says, "We're not the same, we're different," but that is in the middle of the song and so does not count for the purposes of this reckoning.
