Has anyone noticed a shift in pronunciation of "pianist" in recent years? I was taught that the stress fell on the first syllable, no matter what other word it might sound like -- now, there seems to be a growing concensus that the stress should fall on the second syllable.I feel like the success of the movie The Pianist might have played a role, but it's also possible that that was what first brought the shift to my attention.
