(10:04 AM) | Adam Kotsko:
Pronunciation
What is the proper pronunciation of Agamben's name? I normally would say it a-GAHM-ben, but now Anthony throws this curve ball and claims that people in the know say it as a-gahm-BEN. I noted that the latter sounds more like a Star Wars character than a philosopher. (It's also funny to pronounce it as though it were a French name, especially since so many people have had to cite his Paul book in French translation. If you don't think this is funny, you should try laughing anyway, and eventually you'll get into "laughing-because-I'm-laughing" mode, and no one will be able to tell the difference.)I need a definitive answer by 3:30 pm today, or there will be serious consequences.
UPDATE: I'm thinking of doing a paper called "Community and Literature in Nancy and Agamben" for my directed study on those two. I'm hoping that, like my Patristic directed study, the amount of reading explodes beyond all reasonable levels. After all, I wouldn't be a PhD student if I didn't devote two years to putting off a 30-page paper. You know how it is, at those grad school mixers, when everyone is having a pissing match about how many incompletes they have, and you have to walk away with your tail between your legs because you complete your work in a timely fashion. It's embarrassing.
