Friday Afternoon Confessional: Killing Fields, Grocery Stores, and Crack
I confess that I still find the Nancy quotation evoked in my subtitle to be pretty funny.I confess that after years of making fun of the phrase "touch base with" (prompted by years of listening to the smarmy, "business"-oriented chiropractor in Bourbonnais use the term nearly every day at work), I have come to embrace and enjoy the phrase. Part of it is the simple mystery of the thing: what does it mean to "touch base"? Can I "touch base" alone, or only "with" someone? It would seem that the "with" is constitutive of "touching base" -- one can only reach to the fundamental ground of being together with the other. This fundamental ground or "base" is, of course, the page -- always the same -- on which we must assure ourselves that we abide. For why else do we "touch base with" our colleagues, except to "make sure we're on the same page"?
I confess that it's always somewhat jarring to reflect that I worked for approximately two and a half years as a clerk in a small-town chiropractor's office.
I confess that I have too many away messages on Trillian -- now when I add a new one, I put an "a" in front of the title so that it will appear on the visible part of the list.
I confess that I am too thin-skinned.
I confess that the towing incident from my move used up all of my outrage quotient and that I am still unable to feel really deeply angry. For instance, I wasn't angry about our malfunctioning fridge, nor about the steep and arbitrary increase in my insurance rates. I worry about this -- not only that something has broken inside me, but that such a comparatively small thing did it.
I confess that I cannot foresee ever being convinced by a proof of the existence of God.
I confess that I've gotten pretty lazy about linking to other blogs. If you want to read some good posts, aside from the usual closely-associated blogs, I would recommend A Tiny Revolution or 3 Quarks Daily. But among the more or less closely-associated blogs, today I particularly recommend Poetix (by erstwhile Weblog contributor Dominic Fox) and K-Punk.
