Venezuela, a country that is actually doing something.
At the moment Venezuela is in the midst of deciding if the far-Left Chavez will remain president. The link will take you to the Indymedia website, if you are looking for a more balanced reporting then I am sure the Guardian has something as well or if you are looking for the perspective from the Right I would check Reuters or NBC, of course Fox is taking the Facist position. This is an important event for the Left and it is largely going unreported. Chavez has consistently stood up to the hegemony of American power and resisted American backed resistance movements. He distributes profits made off of the nation's oil supply to the impoverished who make up 80% of the country's population. I think Venezuela may be one of the most exciting centers of resistance at the moment and should be looked to for an example. If Chavez is recalled from office it will be one of the most disheartening victories for the Capitalist Empire. What is frightening is the use of touch-screen voting machines. Gotta wonder whose idea those were, Chavez or the corporations that are supporting the recall? If Chavez is using these to secure the legitimacy of his government, for some reason, I don't think of this as a 'bad' thing. The Left's obsession with democractically-elected people has always struck me as, to be blunt, idiotic and, at best, cheesy.
As a sidenote, one of my philosophy professors is part of the Communist party in Venezuela and cancelled his Spring courses so he could travel down there to help support Chavez.
