These Walls Speak Volumes
"Only when protest and response remain in dialogue in such a way that the society which is condemned is also addressed as a community which has fallen away from its own authentic promise can there be a liberation without ultimate violence." Reuther, in Liberation TheologyThat is one of the quotes that's been hanging on my wall for well over a year. I wrote it on a crappy piece of paper with a crappy pen in a crappy scrawl and stuck it up with a piece of crappy Scotch tape. It's right up there with Rawls: "The principles of justice are chosen behind a veil of ignorance" (which isn't calling our justice-formulaters ignorant, it's positing that a system of justice has to be developed without regard for, say, a merit system).
Here is everything else hanging on my wall:
- a photograph of Nate Peake attempting to drink/fight "the Law," a 40 oz. beer glass we had at Triggers. You had to drink it full of beer without moving it from your mouth even once. While you tried, a half-dozen or so friends would stand around you and cheer while The Clash blared from the stereo. Bill Brower was the only one who fought the law and won.
- a photograph of the snow-covered house of my youth (framed)
- an 8 1/2x11 laser-printed copy of a scary, scary picture of Samuel Beckett
- my family at my brother's wedding (framed)
- an 8x10 photo of my brother and I on a rock in our swimsuits (framed)
- an 8x10 autographed photo of the cast of The West Wing
- "The quality of mercy is not strained" penned onto the same crappy paper
- a very bad painting I started 5 years ago. It's of my friend, Russ.
- a photograph of Monica and me hugging atop the great wall (framed)
So there you go. What about you?
Today I spent an hour or so on eBay looking for a Milwaukee Brewers cap. I found a good one, then decided not to buy it. I also left negative feedback for a person who actually paid me two days ago. I just didn't realize it until later. Then I went to the library, then to the Humane Society to look at the dogs. Then I did the weekly crossword puzzle. Then I wrote this post.
So that's it. What about you?
Later I might go play and sing at Linneman's, or maybe meet with my friend Toby about the business we're opening. It's a zine store/performance space. Maybe I'll revise my play some more. Don't read it if you think maybe you'll come see the staging of it in March at Darling Hall.
So, uh. Huh.
