Tuesday: The Eternal Irony of the Community
I hate not being able to find a new image for Tuesday Hatred.I hate that people are burning down embassies because of cartoons. I also hate that the cartoons were published at all. Just because someone ideally shouldn't become murderously angry doesn't mean they won't.
I hate that liberal/progressive Christians are basically ignored. I know that it's their own dumb fault for not becoming total media whores, but a lot of them were just too busy caring for the poor and downtrodden, etc. And it's not like there's only five of them or something -- the "religious left" is about the same size as the "religious right."
I hate that I'm only just now recognizing the extent to which ordinary people do not matter in the American system of governance. We really are just spectators of the interaction among the elites, occasionally allowed to choose between two (usually unappealling) options -- and that is supposed to be democracy. Then when people don't vote, or vote outside of the mainstream, they are responsible for what the elites do. Right.
I hate TV news.
I hate that writers for various TV shows so often lean back on the old Antigone/"Women are the eternal irony of the community" plotline.
I hate that there are people who are willing to sit in judgment on Bonhoeffer for plotting to assassinate Hitler. I hate that none of them extend their logic to the point where it would be a sin to join the army.
Now love.
