(9:11 PM) | Adam Kotsko:
Jazz Albums
Sunday, my computer spent most of the afternoon downloading various jazz albums, starting with Dave Brubeck's Time Out and Miles Davis's Kind of Blue. Richard has had my copy of the latter for at least the past three years, so it was nice to hear it again. I also downloaded several others, but then realized that my knowledge had basically stood still since I had the great good fortune to be roommates with Mr. Mark Miller, whose jazz collection boggled the mind -- and which I, sadly, browsed pretty much at random. So anyway, I'm somewhat familiar with Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Art Blakey, and Charles Mingus at this point. I'd like to expand my grasp somewhat. Can anyone advise me? Aside from albums, good books about the history of jazz will be duly noted for future reference, but I probably won't have time to look at them for a while here.
(Also, if you'd like to weigh in on what I should read next, my options are as follows: Reinhold Niebuhr, The Nature and Destiny of Man; Emmanuel Levinas, Difficult Freedom; Leonardo Boff, Trinity and Society.)
