Instructions to My Future Students: On Citing the Dictionary
If you find yourself writing, "According to the
Mirriam-Webster College Dictionary, 5th edition..." in the course of an academic paper -- or even worse, "The
Mirriam Webster College Dictionary, 5th edition, tells us..." -- you have gone badly astray. The only dictionary you are allowed to cite is the
OED, which contains hidden lore.
