Can't wait for the debates..
I know this has already made the rounds of the internet, but with the first debate coming up in a couple of weeks, I think it's at least worth revisiting with a chuckle..President Bush's definition of what tribal sovereignty might mean and how to resolve conflicts between tribes and the federal government..
"Tribal sovereignty means that. It's sovereign. You..yuh..you're a...you're a..you've been given sovereignty..and you're...you're viewed as a sovereign ent..ity....and therefore the relationship ...between the government and tribes... is one of sovereign entities."
As Jesse Jackson said blessedly in response..when asked what that might mean..
"The President explained. You just didn't understand. Sovereignty is sovereignty. You understand? It's like in sovereignity. If you are on a reservation, you have been soverized. Your Ph.D. is in soverbication. You understand? I don't think you understand. "
Between this and President Reagen saying it was "too bad all the Indians were put on preservations"..how can Oklahoma, which has a large Native American minority, much less New Mexico and Arizona, seriously be leaning Republican?
