John Emerson Steps In
John Emerson has an article on the problems that he sees in analytic philosophy, which he thought might be relevant to the discussions in which I have recently been involved. To review those discussions:- I said that people shouldn't criticize Derrida while refusing to read him.
- I criticized analytic philosophy without having read any of it (unless Wittgenstein or Frege count, which for the purposes of this discussion, they clearly do not). I did, however, ask for a bibliography to help cure my ignorance, which has not been produced.
I can't find a good paragraph to blockquote out of John's article -- it's well put-together, so I don't want to mutilate it. Just go ahead and read it.
